You know, I'm glad that my parents never banned me from consuming any particular media.

Like, a couple of times they did recommend that I didn't consume something, but it was always a recommendation and not an order, and they always gave a reason that meant I wouldn't have wanted to consume it in the first place ('Piers Anthony is a creep and it shows in his work' and 'Rocky Horror Picture Show has a lot of sex scenes' are two examples. ...The only two examples I can think of, actually. Recommendations were rare.)

I'm just-- glad that my parents let me have that sort of freedom.

I love my parents and I know they did their best, but oh boy. Reading this and comparing it to my own childhood is a bit of a whiplash.

I wasn't allowed to watch movies or TV shows that had kissing, cuddling, etc beyond very G-rated Disney stuff.

On the other hand...my dad's a bit of a packrat with his books, and I was encouraged to read as much as I like. Which included reading some books that (in hindsight) were pretty questionable, but which went completely over my head at the time.

Relatedly, oh god yeah Piers Anthony's stuff is. Uh. A lot.
