Funeral yesterday. It went. As well as feasibly possible. Which without going into content warnable details, did feature me becoming both surprise gemstone appraiser and surprise pallbearer.

The body has now kept the score in record time, which is unfortunate because i wanted to go to the zoo :( [My neck and shoulder has just. Imploded on itself.]

Gem appraiser???

So, after the funeral and the wake, there was an event that was described to me as "seeing if there is any jewellery the grand daughters would like to have." And this technically did happen, but there was an agenda: to find if any jewellery was valuable to help with the estate.

And as a geologist, surely I can identify any gems with no equipment or preparation? Oh, you say you would need a microscope? A set of clip on sun glasses is the same thing, here, have a pair.

Unfortunately, my grandmother did not go for jewellery any fancier than semi precious stones, much to the disappointment of the person who assigned me to gem appraiser.

... though after failing to explain that paua shell, while not a rock, was valuable, I did split her paua brooches with a cousin.
