The Chocolate Box Exchange was a cornucopia of fics. Here’s a list of some of the ones I really liked (with the caveat that I have not read all of them, so if there’s a really good one I missed, let me know!)

  • By His Will and the Grace of the Gods and Ever at His Side by [archiveofourown.org profile] greygerbil (Both Original fic, 40 year old virgin king/his male knight who wants to gently deflower him, explicit, ~10k,): These fics are so good. Fealty! Worldbuilding! Decades long mutual pining! So good.
  • A Homecoming of Sorts by [archiveofourown.org profile] habenaria_radiata (Dragon Age, Male Hawke/Fenris, General audiences, 2.8k): cute ‘Hawke gets out of the fade’ reunion fluff.
  • The Proper Care and Feeding of Plot Bunnies by [archiveofourown.org profile] l_cloudy (Original fic, teen, 1.8k): cute magical realism about plot bunnies (and reference rodents!)
  • Waiting by [archiveofourown.org profile] Unforgotten (Original, Princess/Shapeshifting female dragon, teen, 1.9k): This has some really lovely, fairytale-esque, second person prose.
  • a finger’s worth by [archiveofourown.org profile] torch (Dragon Age, Zevran/Alistair, General audiences, 2.7k): This has some awesome banter between Zev and Alistair, and also includes the concept of tea salt assassins, which is just lovely.
  • Wish Upon a Falling Star by [archiveofourown.org profile] serenade (Silmarillion, Beleg/Túrin, teen, 700 words): musing on the very different life spans of Beleg and Túrin, feat. some delicious dramatic irony.
  • Dreams of Fire and Gold by [archiveofourown.org profile] serenade (Silmarillion, Celebrimbor/Sauron, teen, 1.5k): This has beautiful imagery, a prickly Celebrimbor, and even more delicious dramatic irony.

(Programming note: the university semester is starting soon, so I may be around less in the near future)

  • There is a giant parade float thing of Donald Trump as The God Emperor of Mankind. It's definitely satirical, and not comparing Trump favourably to the Emperor-- but ehh. Least I can say is 'it's pretty.' (IMO, While Trump and The Emperor are both terrible people, they're not that similar? Though The Emperor maybe similar to how Trump sees himself, and that's the artitst's point? Who knows.)
  • The Five Worst Dates in Dragon Age: aka The Best Description of the Inquisition Ever.
  • (cws: rape, abuse, violence, victim blaming, the ways communities are very bad at dealing with the aftermath of those things) (I would put this under a cut, but dreamwidth is not playing ball.) Accounting For Ourselves an anarchist's essay on the ways that communities' attempts at dealing with problems of rape and abuse through rehabilitative/transformatibe justice fail spectacularly. It's enummeration of the problems these processes have is really useful and well thought out. For example, one of the big problems these processes have is that there isn't a clear idea what success, failure, or a reasonable timeframe is. However, the suggested solutions... are, let's just say, very anarchist. Ranging from "we can't have experts, because then we'll have authorities!" to "what if the survivors attacked their rapists? that sounds like a good idea!" (...one of the great problems in my life if that I am bad at explaining more moral widgets, so I can't explain my visceral reaction to that other than 'revenge is not great, premeditated violence is bad, and any community that is okay with it's members strangling each other* is desperately unsafe.)

*actual suggestion from the article, there.

  • All Night Laundry, an interactive horror webcomic-thing that has sucked me in. Has a beautiful atmosphere, especially at the beginning. Also, cosmic horror and time travel are too great flavours that go well together! Very more-ish as a piece of entertainment. (There's a lot of warnings this should have, but they are all spoilers of varying degrees, so--) (Also, queer protagonists. That's nice.)

And in things I've recently made:

rip and tear(Explicit, Silmarillion, Finrod-centric, so much imaginary gore): Finrod fantasises about being mauled by werewolves. - Agarwaen (Teen, Silmarillion, Beleg/Turin): a podfic I made of fisheyed's fic of the same name. A Beleg/Turin fix it(?) fic.

  • ChemKnits is at it again (with 'it' being 'dyeing wool with things you wouldn't expect you could dye wool with), this time with gatorade. I'll admit that this has inspired me to acquire some energy drink (not gatorade- the shop I was at didn't sell purple gatorade) for the purposes of dyeing wool. I'm also going to see if I can successfully 'split' the purple to get a gradient.
  • I have discovered Unraveled by Brain David Gilbert. My favourite episode so far is the one about OSHA violations in Smash Bros. Ultimate. I just love people overthinking/going in way too deep about minor things.
  • I am partway through my first romance novel: When A Rake Falls by Sally Orr. It's kind of ridiculous but I love it? Also I love Eve Mountfloy. She is such a good.
  • Lords of Silence by Chris Wraight is making me want to write meta about Nurgle. Specifically: if Great Unclean Ones and Nurglings are both aspects of/literally are Nurgle, what does this imply about Nurgle?

[tumblr.com profile] earlgraytay made an interesting post about romanticisation, through the lens of Pina Coladas and Babooshka. It's rather interesting. Plus, I think it's good to point out that romanticisation is often less about portraying something as good, and more about portraying it as exciting. (Though I obviously have to point out that it is a pattern that bad idea romance stories seem to be accused of romaticising things way more than 'gritty protagonist sets on life on fire' ones do, even though they both romanticise things. Though this may be due to 'romance' and 'romanticising' being ~false friends.)

Though that post reminded my of Babooshka. And Wuthering Heights. Which are both excellent songs. (Other things that are good for reminding you of Kate Bush songs: walking across a heath in -11 C windchill.)

(content warnings at link) [personal profile] earlgraytay's post on social capital is rather good. It's a good look at how using oppression dynamics as your only lens does not work, and how Subcultures Can Be Weird.

(warnings: torture and bullying of simulations) Tom Scott has started a series(?) of 'YouTube Videos From the Future.' Stealing Our Friend's Brain Backup PRANK (GONE WRONG!!!) 🤯🤯🤯 is hard to watch, but it is also exactly my kind of horror. I am sucker for the banality of evil, and horror where the antagonists are unaware of how terrible they are.

[community profile] chocolateboxcomm nominations are happening! I am very excited. I am also endlessly fascinated by the tag set, for reasons of 'ooh, I should totally read/play/engage with that media some time,' 'wow, that sure is a lot of dragon age ships' and 'the people who are nominating original works are collectively amazing and I want to steal their brains.

I have been listening to far too many versions of 'The World Revolving.' And also trying to learn it on flute. (even though that is a frankly absurd amount of sharps)
