The Cthulhu Mythos is large and sprawling, but it does contain short stories and novellas that can stand on there own. I can recommend The Shadow Over Innsmouth by HP Lovecraft as a stand alone novella, freely available on Project Gutenberg, that would give you the information you need to write fic about the Deep Ones.

My art likes contains some general prompts, and feel free to use a fic prompt as a springboard for your art.
