Sep. 30th, 2021 08:06 pmI’ve been thinking about what I should do for NaNoWriMo this year. I know there’s a month to go, but a girl’s gotta plan ahead!
On the one hand, it would be nice to try my hand at writing an original novel over NaNoWriMo. But most of my novel ideas would probably need some more cooking to be ready, and that is not going to be ideal for NaNoWriMo. There’s the fantasy OSHA story I mentioned awhile ago, the fantasy novel that has a whole bunch of name worldbuilding and a main character and a whole bunch of question marks. I also have a couple fantasy romance novel concepts, but, hmm. The first one is incredibly self indulgent, and self indulgent in a way where it is probably never going to see the light of day? It’s riffing off an actual historical thing, and while this thing happened in the 1100s, it would be incredibly transparent what I am doing. (“Wolffy, you just gender swapped this, and added unicorns and wizardry. It’s really obvious and kind of weird!”) Also I’ve accidentally got attached to the name ‘Catamaran Detergent’ for the male lead.
There’s another one that while still quite self indulgent, is less “what are you doing Wolffy?” It’d be idealistic paladin archetype lady knight/cynical lady knight who is working for the Evil Emperor Who Lives In A Tower And Plots The Downfall Of Goodness and Light. And both characters have an arc of getting to be more selfish, of actually valuing their own happiness. Idealistic Knight is very self sacrificing and would set herself on fire to keep people warm, and is very “it’s important that other people get to live a good life. as for me, it’s important that help them achieve that :)” Meanwhile the cynical knight is very “the world sucks, so grow up and learn to deal with it.” She’s aware that she is directly making things worse for other people and herself, but she doesn’t entirely believe that trying to make things better would matter/would achieve things. And together they slowly move in a more ~self valuing and happiness valuing direction...but as you can see, I have characters and a throughline, but, uh, no plot ^^;.
There is another option for NaNoWriMo. I have a fairly long fic queue, and I keep having moments of “[sigh] With the gift for autumn’s-breath and the launch the ship fic and then the Yuletide fic and NiF exchange fic, I’ll never get around to finishing the Jingyan sickfic, and then I’ll never get around to the [Wu Xi sick fic/the trans!Jing Yi fics/my truly ridiculous number of Ningxian premises.]” And like, I could use NaNoWriMo to fix that. NaNoWriMo could be about getting as much fic writing done as possible. (And it would mean I wouldn’t have to NaNoWriMo around/at the same time as Yuletide and the NiF Exchange.) And the Fifty-K Very Fast Fic Queue Clearing First Draft Festival could be a fun way to spend my November.
