A Million Words of Crap
Aug. 9th, 2023 05:10 pmI kind of want to pull ~5000 words of fanfiction out of my arse Soon™️, for arbitrary numerical reasons.
You know that saying about having to write 1 million words of garbage before you start being good? I know that's an arbitrary number that's probably not even based on anything, but still. I've been roughly tracking how close I'm getting.
Now, for every final draft I make, there is usually an outline that's pretty close to the same word count. Not every fic I make has that sort of detailed outline, but most do, and for every fic without that sort of outline, there's one that never got posted.
So, if you looked at my ao3 stats page you could say that approximately half of the words I've ever written are on that page. That's probably a conservative estimate, but if we're doing arbitrary numerical goals, we may as well be conservative about it.
My current ao3 wordcount is 495,554.
I am 4.5k away from saying with confidence that I've written my 1 million words of crap.
I just. Need to write 4.5k of fanfic that gets posted to ao3, and unfortunately I am blanking on fanfic projects. Going through my ideas document, I've got a few that seem like they wouldn't require too much canon review or grow into giant 50k monsters:
a. Imperial Coroner, sickfic about a smallpox outbreak
b. Imperial Coroner, Jing Yi centric rape aftermath/recovery fic,
c. MDZS, 5+1 times Wen Ning got massaged to break his rigor mortis
d. Nirvana in Fire, Xiao Jingyan has hanahaki, except instead of being caused by unrequited love, it's caused by grief. (Unfortunately, Mei Changsu would like people to keep thinking he's dead, but he also does not want the most competent potential heir to choke to death on flowers…)
e. Nirvana in Fire, Mei Changsu has a lot of feelings about no longer being able to ride horses
f. TGCF, Xie Lian has a lot of feelings about gender
g. MCYT, I'm part of a discord that's doing a "we all write fics on a theme, post them anonymously, and see if we can guess who is who." I've written one thing, but I could write... more things...
(Feel free to vote for one or more things.)
