Arbitrary Novel Editing November
Nov. 23rd, 2024 10:41 amI just realised I hadn't posted this here: but my novel! I have finished editing it! It's not done yet, but the ways it's not done are all things like "I need to make a cover," or "I need to write acknowledgements and blurb," or "I need to fight the ebook formatting." But the main body of the thing is done!
I'm planning on spending the rest of November working on ~~anything else~~ other projects. I have shared a poll with tumblr and discord, and it's only fair I share it with the dreamwidth peeps as well.

Date: 2024-11-24 12:43 pm (UTC)In this setting, there is a Dark Ritual[tm] that can resurrect people, but at a cost: the resurrected person will always lose some capability or other, and it's not predictable what gets lost.
Our main character, Omar, is a sorceror (ie knows how to use supernatural and eldritch powers) and a Highly Valuable, so when he dies preventing an apocalypse, he gets brought back.
... and loses the ability to speak or comprehend anything but English.
This is a problem for several reasons:
- he is a Language Nerd and it'san important part of his identity
- he is sincerely religious about the Eldritch Gods From Outer Space, so he's in a situation a bit like someone who learned Koine Greek or Classical Arabic or Sanskrit to read scriptures in the original language and then... losing that
- English isn't his *first* language. So if he ever interacts with his family, they might notice he doesn't speak a language he should, and this might cause a masquerade breach. (Which the Powers That Be are paranoid about, because people who learn about the supernatural keep trying to bring about the apocalypse)
The story is mostly about him trying to cope with the blow to his identity, and having a wrenching conversation with an independent sorceror* about if he can go back (answer: no. )
* who is an Acceptance and Commitment therapist. Don't know why the dream specified that, but I like it.
