Song fic problems
Jul. 16th, 2019 09:32 pmThe problem with me listening to musicals is it keeps making me want to write songfics (in the sense of ‘inspired by a song and titled with a song lyrics’). There are some amazing moods, that would be great for fics--
--except these moods are often so specific, or have context so specific, or the song lyrics plain ol’ won’t make sense to most people (either because they don’t have the context, or they don’t have my brain.)
Like, ‘the meek are gonna get what’s coming to them (by and by)’ is like, a great title for a fic about a character who is going unnoticed, and that’s the reason they’re able to get away with bad shit, but they are inevitably going to be caught. (Maeglin, maybe?)
‘Maintain Your Rage’? Great fic title. Also a quote from former Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, but whatever. Great potential fic title. ...if it weren’t for the fact that, you know, Australian politics and all that jazz.
But my big problem is goddamned ‘Light on the Hill’. Yes, that’s also an Australian political quote as well as a song title. But the song has this great melancholy mood, that would be so good to base a fic around (the melancholy of having so much more you want to do, so much more you can do, but you’re losing the ability to do it due to outside forces. the peculiar melancholy of losing power and having to just watch that happen.) But, I can’t really use any of the lyrics as a title or an epitaph, because they’re all very obviously about Australian politics, and often one particular election. GAHH.
...I have very specific problems.

Well. It's Come From Away. (Come From Away may have just. Permanently changed me as a person, tbh.)
