I should not find the Hugo wank funny. But I do.

And what's funnier than them getting trademark law wrong is that they expected "you're being mean to degrading our intellectual property!" to fly with fans.

Like, oh no, not the intellectual property! As a fan, it is my highest priority that all intellectual property is treated with the utmost respect, and I never do anything to tarnish it's prestige. It is simply unthinkable!

I promise to make it my mission, using the prestige of my fractional Hugo, in the name of dignifying and respecting other's intellectual property, to fight against the disrespect of the all those people claiming to have fractional Hugos!

Honestly this is starting to grow into levels of "what did y'all expect? That a bunch of fangirls would grow teary-eyed at the recognition that what they do isn't garbage instead of being like 'yep lmao we know'?" entertainment. I commented elsewhere that any time fen make jokes about what we do that aren't self-deprecating (also, the jokes about the Hugo victory barely count as self-aggrandizing, considering just how ridiculously most of them are framed) some people lose their minds b/c how dare these buncha women and queers think what they do has value.

Yeah, the initial remarks by Kevin Standlee are very much "We let you into the clubhouse, now you have to enforce the club rules you never payed attention to before."
I think they expected fans to react with "Okay fine you caught me, I will follow the rules now that they benefit someone I like (Ao3)."
And instead fans are saying "Okay fine you caught me, I admit that I never cared that much about the clubhouse."

There are also seems to be a thread of expecting us to respect authority. Which just isn't a thing fandom *does* (at least not often or universally?) Like, the logic seems to be that The Authorities of Ao3 won the award, not everyone that is on it, and that's not quite how ao3 fandom works.

Man, when you said Hugo Wank, I thought it was going to be the latest puppies stuff or something. I mean, after THAT, do they really expect me to be so deeply awed by the Hugos? You guys got swamped by reactionary whiners for a couple years running!

They are weirdly defensive and proprietary considering "Space Raptor Butt Invasion" got nommed and Chuck Tingle had to be like, "don't vote for me, this is horseshit."

You could maybe read it as the Hugos trying to hang on to their slightly tattered dignity-- but getting annoyed at people making jokes is not making them look more dignified and prestigious.
